Facebook promotes from within as it names Alex Schultz CMO

Schultz comes in as CMO at a pivotal point for Facebook as it faces a difficult period with the upcoming US election.

Facebook has named Alex Schultz, previously the social platform’s vice-president of growth, analytics and internationalisation, as its new chief marketing officer.

Schultz will oversee the brand and its marketing at a time when the company is coming under increasing criticism for a perceived lack of action over issues around misinformation – particularly relating to Covid-19 and the forthcoming US presidential election – and hate speech.

He spent four years working on the brand’s safety issues, with a particular focus on improving community standards and tackling ongoing problems around data privacy and hate speech.

Arriving at Facebook in 2007 as an analyst, Schultz worked his way up to become a manager and director, before being named a VP in 2014. He previously worked as a marketing manager at Ebay.

Writing in a Facebook book yesterday, Schultz described himself as “super proud” and said he hopes to bring his “experience in segmentation, targeting, and measurement to bear as we work to reach people more meaningfully through our product.”

Schultz, who replaces Antonio Lucio, will report to Facebook’s vice-president of growth, Javier Olian.
